Be so interesting you cant be ignored

Be so interesting you cant be ignoredBe so interesting you cant be ignoredIn 2007, Steve Martin stopped by theCharlie Roseshow. For those who dont know, Martin got his start as a comedian, and he later built that into a career spanning across television, movies, music, and even writing. He is known for his offbeat and eccentric style. He had recently releasedBorn Standing Up, a very personal memoir and the conversation with Rose centered around how Martin first found himself in front of a stage, the relationships in his life, and the rest of his career.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe bewerbungsgesprch is both touching and funny, but its perhaps most fascinating when Rose asks Martin to explain the followingSomebody once stood up in the audience and asked you how to become successful, and you said thatyou have to be undeniably good at something.Martin looks at him for a second, nods a little, and then sharesWell, people always ask me how do you make it in show business, or whatever. What I always tell them, and Ive said it many years, andnobody ever takes notebecause its not the answer they wanted to hear. What they want to hear is Heres how you get an agent, heres how you write a script,...but I always say,Be sogood they cant ignore you.Simple and somewhat obvious, but also very profound. You cant fault the advice. In fact, Cal Newport wrote abookabout exactly this topic arguing whydeveloping skills and optimizing yurself to be good at something is a far better career path than waiting for your passion. That said, I think it can be further supplemented. The Limitations ofGoodThe world we live in today is heavily dictated by theattention economy. There are far more stimuli in our average environment than there has ever been at any point in history. Our senses are constantly bombarded withnoise. This is particularly prominent on the internet, where the amount of i nformation and data produced continues to grow exponentially, but the digital reality is far from theonlyplace where this is true.Think about the buildings, advertisements, and attractions of the average large city in the world and compare that to how it may have looked 50 to 100 years ago. The chances are that you wouldnt even recognize it.What this has done is that, withso much competition for our attention, its put a premium on dedicated engagement.Indeed,to many companies, our attention is the most valuable metric to measure such engagement, and this fact has perpetuated a cycle of even more noise. While its true that the market rewards whats good and valuable over time, with the increasing noise, that time frame is getting longer and longer. In the words of legendary economist John Maynard KeynesMarkets can remain irrational a lotlongerthan you and I can remainsolvent.Very broadly speaking, beinggood alone isnt enough. We live in a world where being able to signal that competence is almost as important.Marketing yourself in some form is a necessity. The Power of InterestingThe best marketers in the world dont tell you theyre marketers. They tell you a story, theyengage you with genuine excitement, and theymostlytreat you like the human being you arerather than a number. It goes beyond that, too, though. Doing these things will take you far, but even so, in a noisy world, there is a particular quality that rewards some people over others. Its why they are able to capitalize on their competence. To be sure, tactics and hacks often do work in getting someone to pay attention to you, but building long-term trust in your competence takes more than that.It takes adegree of interestingness. The term interesting is fairly broad, but thats exactly its strength in this case.In order to get the attention you deserve you not only have to be so good they cant ignore you, butyou also have to be so interesting they cant ignore you.Interestingis whatmakes you stop and look twice. I nteresting is what inspires you to dig deeper.Interesting is how you stand out in the noise.Once you capture interest, your competence can do the work for you.The beauty of using this term is that it describes an output that always gets a response, but it can be accomplished through a multitude of inputs. You dont need to know the depths of every marketinghackin the book, nor are you circumstantially confined. All you need to do is optimize whatever it is youre selling, whether it be yourself or a product, for interestingness.More often than not, thatsdone bycapitalizing onwhatmakes youunique. The World MadeEasyWhile what weve talked about is most relevant to careers, all of this is far broader than that if we loosen up our definitions a little bit. Most people have a very narrow view of marketing because theyve been forced or tricked one too many times into having their time stolen. When you really break it downmarketing is justthepsychologyof getting someone to give you a moment ofthei rfocus.Nothingmore, nothing less. When youre giving a presentation at work or school, youre marketing. When youre at a bar hoping to make eye contact, youre marketing.Whenyoure telling someone a personal story, youre marketing. In each of these instances, youre vying not only for someones time but also their attention, with the hope and possibility of something more. The only way they are going to give you something more, however - whether it be their money, their company, or their empathy - isifsomething about you makes them take a second look.Something thatmakes them pause. How good you are at something isnt always visible even after the first glance.Toget someone coming back enough times for them to noticeyour competence, you have to add a bit of intrigue.Be so interesting you cant be ignored. This article first appeared on Design Luck .You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, stu dy finds10 lessons from kleine Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Better Fusion Reactors on the Horizon

Better Fusion Reactors on the Horizon Better Fusion Reactors on the Horizon Better Fusion Reactors on the HorizonMark Cappelli, professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University, is a parte of work that will hopefully propel the future of fusion reactors. We are able to create this plasma jet and impinge it on surfaces to study interaction to see how it degrades a surface creates stresses in surfaces, he says. All of that is relevant to fusion machines because when we eventually have to try and engineer unterstellung machines you hope the maintenance part of the machine wont be high or it wont pay itself back.Getting TestyAccording to Cappelli, they realized six to seven years ago that the plasma that accelerated (high energy, high velocity) is similar to the plasma jets that form in the peripheral part of a fusion machine. The curious thing about these machines is when you think of them as large spheres and about being close to the wall of the spheres. Theres a strong magnet ic field and the field prevents the plasma from being in the proximity of the other wall, like a barrier, he says.A 50W helicon discharge for use in microsat propulsion. Image StanfordOne problem is that the curtain that is the strong magnetic field becomes leaky. Plasmas become unstable and squirt through the magnetic field, says Cappelli. This plasma rocket we were developing presents the same kind of conditions you see in a fusion machine. We took an interest in how these plasmas accelerate and what happens when these plasmas strike a wall that is designed to protect a plasma vessel, he adds.Their work departureed off with something involving space propulsion and ended up moving towards fusion. With regard to the device that creates the jets, we start out with the means of storing tremendous amounts of electrical energy then take that energy and release it into what some would call a can, he says. Think of it as an inductor. It creates a magnetic field. This plasma jet squirts it out of this balloon inflated with magnetic energy and into inductance into this balloon storing this magnetic energy. It pops and produces this high velocity and the relatively high temperature jet of plasma. We dont understand the popping part well and thats something were working on.The capacitor used is several cubic meters but the device itself is about half of a meter in size and about one-fifth of a meter in diameter. He compares it to a cannon. The device is essentially a cylinder with a center electrode in the cylinder, he says. When that magnetic bubble breaks, there are conditions that are comparable to the core of a fusion reactor. We think this can be intriguing but, again, our interest is on the jet thats accelerated, the plasma compressed to very high temperatures.Cappelli has learned important lessons from the testing thus far. For my work, what Im realizing is that just one disruption event, meaning just one firing on our machine, can have a huge effect, he says. Wh at we find when we look at the surface it strikes and damages are cracks and ablation. You have to ask, If I fire this thing a bunch of times what will the surfaces be like?Another problem is where the surface ends up. It has to go somewhere and can go into the reactor. The core of the reactor is bringing in hydrogen and this material which is largely tungsten is very disruptive to the fusion process, he explains. Its an impurity which is very difficult to mitigate against and wreaks havoc on fusion reaction. I believe the investment has to be made in understanding what causes these events that will eventually degrade the walls to where maintenance on the machine might not be sustainable. Think of us as crash test engineers continuing to try to help improve the first wall, that part of that wall that faces the plasma.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Learn about the latest energy solutions at ASMEsPower Energy Conference and Exhibition For Further Discussion Think of us as cr ash test engineers continuing to try to help improve the first wall, that part of that wall that faces the plasma.Prof. Mark Cappelli, Stanford University

How to Cope With Losing Your Job and How to Move On

How to Cope With Losing Your Job and How to Move OnHow to Cope With Losing Your Job and How to Move OnCall it what you want- being laid off or downsized, getting dismissed or fired, receiving your pink slip or your walking papers- losing your job hurts. Job loss often ranks among the highest in stress on a list of life-altering events such as a death in the family, divorce, and serious illness. It can have a profound effect on your emotional well-being. There is a typical cycle that most people experience when they go through the loss of a job. It includes denial, anger, frustration, and eventually adaptation. Dealing With Job Loss As you can see, being separated from ones job is tough and many people experience grief much in the same way they do when someone close to them dies. It is not terribly surprising since a significant parte of your life goes away when you lose your job. Many of us closely identify ourselves by what we do for a living. When someone takes your job away, yo u can lose track of who you are and even why you are, that is, your purpose in life. If you let it, dealing with the emotional aspects of losing your job can keep you from moving forward. Have yourself a good cry and rant to your friends and family (not your coworkers) about your miserable boss. Then try to put your emotional issues aside while you address a number of significant practical ones. The first thing you must do is determine how long your financial resources will sustain you. Then you must decide if you want to look for another job in the same occupation or make acareer change. Finally, you must begin to start planning your future. Taking Care of the Practical Stuff Finances are a big concern for most people. When you lose your job, you must figure out how to provide for yourself and your family until you find a new one. Unemployment insurancecan help you make ends meet for a little while, but you must meet certain criteria to qualify for it. In the United States, yo ur local Employment Service Center will be able to help you figure out if you are eligible for this benefit. You can visit the website of the U.S. Department of Laborto learn more about it. The next issue to deal with is health insurance. In the United States, the majority of people who have health insurance are covered under a group plan through their employer. When you lose your job, that benefit may disappear as well. That is why The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) was passed some time ago. If you are separated from your job and it was the source of your health insurance, COBRA will allow you continue your policy by paying for it on your own at the group rate. That will typically cost much less than paying for individual or family coverage on your own. Moving On Once you have come to terms with all the emotional and financial matters, it is timefor you to move on. You must decide where to go next. The first thing you should do is look at why you lost yo ur job. welches the company downsizing? If so, is this a trend in your industry? Do you want to stay in the same occupational field? Maybe you should consider a career change. Perhaps you dont have all the skills new employers will want. It could be a good time to spruce up yourskills to make yourself more marketable. Rather than looking at a job loss as a horrible thing, it might be better to consider the positive implications of this situation. Take the time to make some changes- switch careers or industries, learn some new skills and improve upon the ones you already have, or perhaps consider relocating. Look forward to your next opportunity. You never know what doors this turn of events may open for you.

For example, in your Education section, you can hide the GPA in case you dont want to share it.In the Experience section, you can hide Company Description (in case the company you worked for is well-known, otherwise is good to describe it in a word or two), Bullets (used when writing your accomplishments), Location, Period or the Link to the companys website. In c ase you dont want icons in any of your sections, you can hide them, too, following the same steps.4. Write in any languageAnother benefit of the platform is that you can fill your sections and the whole resume in any language you like. As already mentioned above, you can rename each section which means you can name them in your own language. In case you use other grading systems than GPA, you can hide the GPA and write your grade in brackets next to the name of your university or the name of your degree. When it comes to dates in which you studied or worked, you can use only years in case you dont think its appropriate to share shortened months names in English. You can hide the dates completely and write them as a bullet in the Education section, or next to your position in the Experience section.See an example of a resume in Italian here.Related articlesWhy we offer a day off for mental healthHow we screwed up an awesome feature (and learned our lesson)A week to remember s spring P ower Week5. Include a photoIn the US, its illegal to consider factors like age, race, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability status in hiring decisions. Some of behauptung details can be revealed through your photo. Therefore the hiring professionals prefer not to officially know these details. In case you prefer to hide the photo on your resume when using the platform, click on the Personal Info section on the top of your resume and then the Settings icon. From there you can decide whether to show or hide other details too, such as your Phone number, Location, etc.Useful Tip If you decide to add a Profile Photo to your resume, make sure its a high-quality headshot. Find more advice here.Back to youThe flexibility of the platform is quite unique, dont you think? Whether youre looking for a very corporate looking resume or a more visually compelling one, you can create it in a few minutes.I hope I provided some useful examples of how to go about changin g each section to get the most out of it. The Friendish Workplace

The Friendish Workplace Its very peculiar how describing someone as friendly to you usually means (s)he is not your friend. When a supervisor is understood to be friendly, thats normally taken and offered as code for but not friends. To presume that you are friends with your boss (or even with a coworker) just because (s)he is friendly is, well, presumptuous. The new manager who, on day one, says, I like to think of myself as being friendly and accessible is almost certainly and rightly being perceived as ruling out being friends and tacitly warning staff against expecting or trying to accomplish that. Nonetheless, knowing that you are dealing with someone professing or perceived to be friendly can be very confusing and raise false expectations of friendship.Misunderstood warning shots can take another commonplace form (in or outside the workplace) Despite the ominous overtones of just friends, sai d to the jilted or otherwise rejected, it still sounds like some kind of achievement and encouragementthat, in being misunderstood, can raise false hopes and cause serious missteps. The challenge in all behauptung cases is to distinguish the merely friendly sheep from the true friend goat, if confusion, embarrassment, disappointment and possible serious trouble are to be prevented. As for friendly friends, somehow that notion makes sense only when describing how ones friends behave with non-friend third-parties.The (Office) Politics of FriendshipThe political correlate of friend is ally. Is an ally best understood as a nation that likes you as a friend, or merely one that will collaborate and cooperate to achieve some shared or private objective (often ultimately or secretly not your goal)? Even and especially in politics, friendly and frank meetings suggests alignment of self-serving strategic and tactical interests more than friendship. Nothing is more frustrating and dangerous tha n to go to war expecting your allies to back you, only to discover that they were friendly, but not friends. In the professional arena, coworkers and the workplace itself are supposed to be friendly. Its considered nice to have and to try to become friends at work. In the world of social media, being friended on Facebook is, by the nave, taken to be the pinnacle of social success and existential validation. But how many of these friends actually care about you or are prepared to actually offer help when its needed? The dictionary explanation that a friend is1. a part whom one knows well and is hintergrund of intimate associate close acquaintance2. a person on the same side in a struggle one who is not an enemy or foe ally (Merriam Webster)is too weak, since neither of these definitions suggests helpfulness, willingness to sacrifice on ones behalf or deep concern about ones well being. As a substitute for these, fond of is rather anemic. I can be fond of you, but unwilling to make any sacrifice for you. Consider the dowager Victorian aunt, in an equally Victorian novel, who says to her wastrel nephew looking for a handout, I am very fond of you dear boy, but.As for the second definition, it sounds too much like Dubbya Youre either with us or you are with the terrorists. It rules out (friendly) neutrality of action.Conversationships and the IrishThe temptation to think that, just because you blather with friendly people online, you have friendships with them must be resisted. These are, in many cases, merely what I call conversationships (which despite their multifarious engaging functions, such as boasting, complaining, comparing, confessing, rationalizing, information mining and reassurance, are mostly friendly talk, rather than soul-melding proof of deep friendship). Then there are the national reputations Canadians (the Irish, the Chinese, Americans, the Nepalese,.) are so friendly Those who travel say and hear it all the time, yet, strangely, on reflection ack nowledge that, all too often, its a case of always friendly, never friends. (Equally odd is the selective use of the when praising some countries and their people Americans will never say the Canadians are friendly, preferring Canadians are friendly. Is it because the suggests all of them, which is, at best, a friendly overstatement? On the other hand, nobody says Irish are friendly. Its always The Irish are friendlyperhaps because it is widely believed that all of them are? (Note The Scots really are friendly too.)The Concept of Being FriendishSo, how can we demarcate those who are merely friendly from those who are friends, in order to avoid overstepping those lines of expectation and behavior? One useful criterion is very easy to state A friend is someone who will actually offer you a nice day, instead of just wishing you one. (The wish is valid evidence of friendliness, not friendship.) The problem with this is that despite its clarity and conciseness, it is not as widely applied as it should be. Hence, the common mistake of assuming that friendly people want to be friends, e.g., invite you to come over and toss a shrimp on the barbie, and the inevitable disappointment in discovering that most have absolutely no interest in or behuf of becoming friends. To the extent that the concept of being friendly is misinterpreted and over-extended to erroneously forecast friendship, it may be advisable to replace it with another concept that more clearly connotes always friendly, never friends. My proposal is to coin and use my term for this friendish. One advantage of friendish over friendly and friends is that, in being an unfamiliar concept, it forces us to pause and think about what we really meansomething that friendly (in part because of its familiarity, in part because of wishful thinking) does not.A second advantage is that it sounds like Irish, which, of course, sounds.very friendly, without any presumed promise of more than that.
